Griff is a trio from Belgium playing several kinds of bagpipes and whistles. This young and dynamic trio’s star is rising very fast in the European world of folk and this second album shows exactly why. For some it might sound like a nightmare, three bagpipe’s on one album and often it is at least a bad dream. But not with Griff, this CD shows how inventive a bagpipe can sound and the fact that so many European countries have their own, unique bagpipe culture. This album starts very uncomfortable with Solstice. The sound is unpolished and on a few occasions I spot a light disharmony. It wakes me up and prepares me for the fabulous Salut a la compagnie a French traditional that has been recorded by the legendary Malicorne. Griff’s version has the same atmosphere but is very different in style and arrangements and at least as good as Malicorne’s version. Nice is their powerful interpretation of the Dutch/Belgian traditional song De Herderkens and the exasperating tune Pirouette en neige. That the band is capable of playing some virtuoso Italian tradition proofs Santa Juliana and ending with To yasemi the trio made their point, they bring bagpipe music to a higher level and that will hopefully be appreciated by many!
